COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.
President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.
The blaze flared Tuesday night with sudden ferocity and quickly overran fire containment lines, invading the northwestern corner of the city. But officials have declined to characterize the extent of property damage there.
Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown told Reuters that he had "a number in mind" for the approximate tally of homes lost in Tuesday night's firestorm but did not want to release that information until residents of those dwellings were notified.
The blaze left an orange hue over Colorado Springs, and a smoky haze hung in the air, so thick in places that the giant, roiling pall of smoke that continued to billow into the sky over the city was obscured from the ground.
Governor John Hickenlooper said after flying over the fire zone Tuesday night that he saw many homes destroyed in a "surreal," luminous landscape below, but did not give a number.
Pressed for an estimate of property losses on Wednesday, fire information officer Greg Heule said, "We've started the process of identifying the structures, but we haven't completed the inventory," adding "there's still active fire in there."
Brown called the firestorm threatening his city - in a metropolitan area of more than 650,000 people - "a monster" and said that flames were "not even remotely close to being contained."
The fire, which has scorched more than 15,000 acres in the shadow of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop, was not as intense early on Wednesday as the day before. But thunderstorms hampered firefighting efforts by bringing erratic winds, whipping flames from one direction to another.
"I've never seen any progression like that," incident commander Rich Harvey said at a late-afternoon news conference. "The winds keep shifting on us. Again the winds are causing us problems out here."
The number of evacuees stood at 32,000 on Tuesday night. But after additional residents in and around the nearby town of Woodland Park, population 7,600, were ordered from their homes on Wednesday, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the number displaced people had grown by about 3,000.
Colorado wildfires have killed four people so far this year in what the governor called "the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," but no serious injuries from the Waldo Fire were reported on Wednesday.
AIR FORCE SENDS HELP
The Air Force Academy said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on its grounds housing around 2,100 civilian and military personnel and their families. Despite the blaze, the academy will welcome a class of over 1,000 new cadets on Thursday, officials said.
Proximity to the academy, which saw a spot fire break out on its grounds in one vacant corner, seemed to bode well for U.S. government support in responding to the emergency.
The Air Force said it was dispatching up to 25 military helicopters, joining four giant C-130 air tankers already devoted to the effort. Over half of federal firefighting resources are deployed in Colorado, the White House said.
Fire commanders said they have called for reinforcements and expect to have as many as 1,000 personnel on the lines soon.
At a gas station in Colorado Springs, Andrew Heintzelman, 34, said he had been on the roof of his home in the nearby community of Mountain Shadows on Tuesday trying to keep the flames at bay but had since been forced to flee.
"I was spraying the hose on the shingles and the cops came through the neighborhood and told me to get out now," said Heintzelman, 34, who lives with his mother.
Animal welfare groups said shelters had taken in scores of dogs, cats and even a turtle and pet rats displaced by the fire. Of particular concern to veterinarians was the risk that horses could suffer colic from being moved too quickly and that pets were being spooked by the steady wail of sirens.
The Waldo Canyon Fire was one of about a dozen burning across Colorado. The biggest of those, the High Park fire near Fort Collins in the northern part of the state, has consumed 87,250 acres but was 65 percent contained. It now ranks as the most destructive wildfire on record in Colorado after devouring about 250 homes.
Elsewhere across the Rocky Mountain West, a wildfire in Montana that has scorched 19,000 acres in the eastern part of the state has forced 600 residents to leave their homes, said Kent Atwood, a state hazard mitigation officer. An unknown number of houses were destroyed in Montana.
In Utah, authorities found a body in the ashes of the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City on Tuesday, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched more than 46,190 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheatgrass and sagebrush.
Colorado accounts for eight of 35 large, active wildfires being fought across the country. The bulk of them were in nine western states - Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California - according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.
Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

Racing Vegan With Team Plant Power by Heidi Volpe?
Recently I raced the?12 Hours of Temecula and was lucky enough to race with the talented, just turned pro Sarah Jasen. She nabbed a top 10 spot in the Whiskey 50 and has been tearing it up in the UET Endurance Series here in So Cal for Team Margarita, which she founded.
We raced for So Cal Endurance under the team name, ?Plant Power?. Why? Because we were powered by plants.?We both raced as Vegans, fueling before during and after the race with our own hand made food. For the record, beer is vegan and goes well with Chia Black Bean Burgers!
We competed against 8 all male duo?s and got 2nd place, lapping 3rd place, though we were double lapped by our own team mates, Joel Titus and Mario Correa!? That said we beat all the co-ed teams and completed 15 laps in 11.5 hrs. Plant Power and tenacity goes a long way!
Here?s the run down on how we fueled and feasted before, during and after the race. Most of the recipes we made were from or inspired by Brendan Brazier?s book?Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life.
GEL (Thrive Recipe)
4 dates (I used dates, soaked for a few hours, and used the date water in the next drink)
1/2 cup raw agave nectar
1 Tbsp lime zest
2 tsp lemon zest
1/2 tsp dulse
Sea salt to taste
I added some guanara
Vita Mix it or use a high speed blender
RECOVERY DRINK?(Thrive Recipe)
4 large Medjool dates (remove pits)
2 cups water
1 tbsp hemp protein
2 tbsp sprouted buckwheat (or substitute cooked)
Juice from 1/2 lemon
Juice from 1/4 lime
1/2 tsp lemon zest
1 tsp ground dulse flakes
1 tsp maca powder
1 tsp greens powder (chlorella or spirulina) I used Vital Greens
Vita Mix it or use a high speed blender
COLD QUINOA SALAD (Heidi Volpe)
Some Cooked quinoa, red or regular (this is your base )
A few shakes Black Charcoal lava salt to taste
A couple handfuls Edamame (shelled)
Sesame oil to taste
Some red onion finely chopped or green scallions
A few salted blanched carrots finely chopped
A couple wasabi seaweed sheets cut up with a scissors
How ever many you feel like heirloom cherry tomatoes, sliced
1/2 avocado
Sting with fresh squeezed lime juice
Mix it up.
SWEET POTATO CHEWS?(Thrive?Recipe)
6 organic sweet potatoes, scrubbed
Coconut oil
Cinnamon
Hemp or pumpkin seeds
Puncture with Sweet Potatoes, bake at 375? for 40 minutes,?let them cool, then peel.
Cover a baking sheet with coconut oil (so they don?t stick) slice the potatoes in 1/2 cm uniform circles, arrange on pan
With a pastry brush, use some melted coconut oil, and brush the tops, dust with cinnamon. and bake at 300? for approx 20 min. Experiment with baking times until you reach a desired texture. I also sprinkled on hemp seeds once they were done baking, and have added pumpkin seeds as well. These are a great post work out snack and pack well.
CURRY PIZZA?(Thrive Recipe)
Pizza Crust
2 cups ground sunflower seeds
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp turmeric
Sea salt to taste
Procedure:?Preheat oven to 300?. In a food processor, process all crust ingredients until mixture starts to ball up. Lightly oil the baking tray with coconut oil. Spread mixture on tray to about 1/4 inch thick (it can be thicker or thinner if you prefer). I used a baking pan so it would hold its shape. Add sauce and toppings, bake. I waited until the sides pulled away from the pan, this is how I knew it was close to done. Spread Spicy Sun-Dried Tomato Marinara Sauce (see below) add topping. Bake for 45 minutes. (This will vary slightly depending on the moisture content of the vegetables and the desired crispness of the pizza. I used pre grilled eggplant, red peppers. olives, and mozzarella almond cheese, oregano and some red onion.
This sauce can either be served raw or simmered over low heat for about 10 minutes to further blend the flavors. If you choose to heat it, try stirring in 1/2 cup nutritional yeast for a cream-textured sauce, it sorta tastes like cheese.
1 cup sun-dried tomatoe
1 clove garlic
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup water1/2 cup grated cucumber
3 tbsp hemp oil
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp rosemary
1/4 tsp thyme
Sea salt to taste
Soak the sun-dried tomatoes in the water for 20 minutes. Retain this water. In a food processor, process all ingredients, including sun-dried tomatoes water, until desired consistency is reached.Keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.
Makes about 3 1/2 cups
NOTE: I also added some organic tomato paste to thicken this up a bit because I found the above a little too watery and made the pizza fall apart.

After giving birth, you can begin to shed the pounds you gained during your pregnancy without ever?having to set foot in a gym. There are many ways that you can get exercise at home and around your?neighborhood, which will give you more time and flexibility to attend to your newborn. Taking care of a?baby is a full time job, so having the freedom to squeeze in a workout at any available time of day right in?the comfort and privacy of your living room is both convenient and easy.
Before you begin an exercise routine, be sure that you listen to your body signals so you don?t overwork?it. Right after you give birth, your body needs some time to adjust and recover from pregnancy and being?in labor. Your immediate goal should be to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle, rather than trying?to reach a certain goal on the scale. Even though many celebrities are able to shed the baby weight at?an incredibly fast rate doesn?t mean that this is ideal, so don?t worry about trying to match their standards.?Gradually you?ll be able to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts as you get stronger and?fitter, and the results will start to show in a healthy way.
For most women, light exercise can be incorporated into your post-pregnancy lifestyle within several?weeks of getting birth, and usually after six weeks or more for C-section births. Always consult with?your doctor and discuss your plans for exercise and weight loss after giving birth. Your doctor answered?all of your questions concerning labor and delivery and provided advice on options like cord blood and?immunizations, and your doctor can do the same for you concerning your lifestyle habits and different diet?and exercise options. Once you?ve gotten your doctor?s approval, it?s time to burn some calories!
MOVE AROUND
To start out, try moving more during your day by walking and doing light activities around the house, like?cooking, cleaning, and gardening. Taking walks around the neighborhood while pushing your baby in its?stroller is a nice way to spend time together while getting some good exercise. Eventually you can also?switch to a running or jogging routine several times a week. Wear a pedometer so you can keep track?of your steps each day. This will help motivate you to move more, and it helps you to see the progress?you?re making ?throughout the day. Set a reasonable daily goal, and try to meet it, or even surpass it if you have extra energy.
SWIM
If you have a pool, try swimming laps or treading water to burn calories. Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island has been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its-kind national effort to significantly improve breastfeeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest. Rhode Island ranks 35th in the nation for breastfeeding initiation. Women & Infants is the only hospital in New England to be selected for this collaborative.
Although breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health measures for infants and mothers, half of US-born babies are given formula within the first week, and by nine months, only 31% of babies are breastfeeding at all. Best Fed Beginnings seeks to reverse these trends by dramatically increasing the number of US hospitals implementing a proven model for maternity services that better supports a new mother's choice to breastfeed. The National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) is leading the effort through a cooperative funding agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will be working closely with Baby-Friendly USA, Inc.
"Women & Infants Hospital is very proud to have been chosen to participate in this important effort and to have the opportunity to improve our maternity care services to better support breastfeeding," said Angelleen Peters-Lewis, RN, PhD, senior vice president of Patient Care Services. "We recognize that for women who plan to breastfeed, the hospital experience strongly influences a mother's ability to start and continue breastfeeding. We are committed to implementing evidence-based care through the Baby-Friendly designation process. This will ensure that mothers delivering in our facility who intend to breastfeed are fully supported."
Women & Infants is among 90 hospitals selected from 235 applicants to participate in this initiative. The groups will work together in a 22-month learning collaborative, using proven quality improvement methods to transform their maternity care services in pursuit of "Baby-Friendly" designation. This designation verifies that a hospital has comprehensively implemented the American Academy of Pediatrics-endorsed Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as established in the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. Breastfeeding rates are higher and disparities in these rates are virtually eliminated in hospitals that achieve this status.
"We look forward to working with Women & Infants Hospital and congratulate them on their successful application," said Charlie Homer, MD, MPH, president and CEO of NICHQ. "The large number of applications we received affirms the commitment of hospitals across our country to be part of a health care system that truly focuses on promoting health for women and infants. Are you in menopause and afraid to take estrogen? It's been 10 years since one of the most significant papers in women's health was published -- a study on the risks and benefits of estrogen plus progestin in healthy postmenopausal women. The WHI papers scared the hell out of women and many of their doctors (see below). But during the 10 years since the study was published, new studies have disproven many of the findings. But harm was done for women; the fear prevented many women from taking estrogen that could have prevented terrible symptoms, and those women suffered. I want to help you make sense of these important studies.
First, let's look at what the studies were supposed to do.
At that time, estrogen plus progestin (notice, not progesterone which is the natural hormone, but progestin, a synthetic substance that the woman's body responds to similarly to how it responds to progesterone) were being recommended for all women in menopause to lower the risk of heart disease as well as treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79 (mean age 63) were given different formulations of the most common estrogen and progestin medications in use at the time.
Giving hormones to older women, they thought, would lower their risk of heart disease and so the study didn't take into account how old the women were, how long it had been since they started going through menopause, or if they were at risk for any other diseases. Hormone Therapy (HT) was considered both good and safe.
There were two hormone studies that were started about the same time. The first involved giving some 16,000 women either estrogen and progestin (Prempro -- the most commonly used hormone of this type at the time) or placebo. That study was stopped three years early because the risks were greater than the benefits. Not only did HT not protect women from heart disease, the study reported an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack and breast cancer. There was however, an equally lower risk of colon cancer and risk of breaking your hip.
The second study also followed a large number of women. But this group of women had their uterus removed (hysterectomy) as well as their ovaries. Women who have their uterus removed do not need to take progesterone or progestin -- only estrogen. Once again, the study was stopped early because the women taking estrogen had an increased risk of stroke compared to those who took a placebo. However, compared to the women in the first study who took estrogen and progestin, these women who took estrogen only didn't have an increase of breast cancer or heart disease.
Postmenopausal women threw away their estrogen in droves and endured a very challenging window of time. So challenging, in fact, that many of my patients who initially went off their hormones called me up and within three to six months wanted to get back on them. But in that year after the WHI was first published, between 25 and 72 percent of women stopped taking HT.
Over the past decade since those initial WHI studies were done, many of their conclusions have changed. Here are my thoughts on the highlights.
Estrogen and progesterone, now called HT instead of HRT, is still the most effective treatment for symptoms related to menopause.
HT is a very reasonable and safe treatment for menopausal symptoms for many women, but it can't be the only treatment we offer. Some women, especially those with a history of breast cancer or uterine bleeding or blood clots or who smoke, should talk with their doctors about alternatives to HT.
If you want to go on HT or consider going on it, there seems to be a critical window of time to start -- the closer to the onset of menopause the better. Ten years after menopause, it may be too late to start HT.
Treatment must be individualized and not assume that "one size fits all."
Estrogen taken through the skin seems to be less of a risk for blood clots than estrogen taken by mouth.
HT works great for preventing osteoporosis or thinning of the bones
Estrogen only may reduce (not increase) the risk of breast cancer.
Estrogen may reduce the risk of stroke in certain subgroups of menopausal women.
If you are interested in taking estrogen and/or progesterone or want to consider it as a possible treatment for your symptoms, talk with someone who is knowledgeable about these medications. It isn't the same as going in for an antibiotic -- it will take time for the health professional to understand your personal risks, explain what the benefits and risks are for you, and provide you with an explanation of your options. When I see patients for these types of discussions, I allot nearly an hour to go over everything. Make sure you find the right person to work with you.

Sin embargo, sabemos tambi?n que la coreana est? intentando aprovechar que Apple a?n no ha lanzado el iPhone 5 al mercado para ir conquistando al p?blico de la competencia, y si bien a?n vamos a tener que esperar a ver el iPhone 5 en escena unos meses, la verdad es que Cupertino no quiere dejar a Samsung campo libre, y esta vez ha sido el director de la f?brica Foxconn el que se ha pronunciado de forma tajante:

Aunque es verdad que hemos de suponer que el CEO de Foxconn habla con conocimiento de causa, puesto que su empresa es la que ensambla el nuevo iPhone, y ha de conocer muchas de las piezas que ya lo integran. Sin embargo, en esas declaraciones no ha tenido ning?n reparo en decir tambi?n acerca de Samsung que es ?una compa??a con un record a la hora de jugar sucio contra sus competidores?.
Precisamente eso nos hace sospechar que son ellos tambi?n los que quieren jugar sucio, haciendo que el iPhone 5 conquiste mercado a?n antes de ser lanzado. La verdad, si solo se hubiera quedado en la primera fase, tendr?a mucha m?s credibilidad ?No les aprece?
Chris Hansen is an unfamiliar name in NBA circles ? save for some holdover fans of To Catch A Predator (which is a different Chris Hansen) ? but the investor has led a team of businessmen in the journey to bring an NBA team back to Seattle, as told in a terrific story in Saturday's New York Times. Hansen has already purchased a plot of land in Seattle's SoDo district and teamed up with the Nordstrom brothers (yes, that Nordstrom) in an investment plan that doesn't rely on public tax money, the inevitable back-breaker with the team's move to Oklahoma City. From the NYT:
He started from scratch and developed a proposal that will include nearly $300 million in private investment toward an arena, with the remaining $200 million bonded by the City of Seattle and King County and paid off over 30 years through rent and tax revenue that will not exist if the arena is not built.
Hansen's an interesting character ? he's been a Sonics fan since the '70s, including during their lone NBA championship in 1979. Still, despite the glowing comments from those surrounding the efforts to bring a team back to Seattle, there is no plan in place for how to actually get said team to come. Stay optimistic, Seattle.

The Google Doodle today immortalizes the contributions of Alan Turing, the British mathematician.

The Google homepage today is adorned an interactive Turing Machine, a gadget often identified as a predecessor to the modern computer. The doodle honors Alan Turing, a British mathematician, cryptanalyst, and the inventor of the Turing Machine. But Turing, who would have turned 100 today, has another, even more important accolade to his name: He helped bring a close to World War II.?
In 1938, Turing, already an accomplished mathematician with a doctorate from Princeton, began working with the British Government Communications Headquarters, which was tasked with cracking the infamous Enigma machine. First pressed into use in 1919, the Enigma machine was used to decipher and transmit messages between German commands.?
Deciphering the Enigma code, the British correctly believed, would lend them a great advantage over the German war machine, which was then lurching into gear. As David Leavitt of the Washington Post notes, "because the [Engima] code was generated by a machine, Turing decided, only a machine could break it." Together with a group of the best scientists in England ? chief among them Gordon Welchman ??he set about building it.?
The first "bombe," as the code-cracking machines were known, received the name of "Victory" ? the next was dubbed "Aggie," short for Agnus Dei. The machines were installed in?Bletchley Park, an estate in?Buckinghamshire, England, and quickly put to work. By November of 1942, during the height of the war, there were reportedly 49 bombes in use, all of them dedicated to deciphering German code.?
All the information, meanwhile, was collected under the codename Ultra.?The project was a wild success: With the help of the machines made by Turing and Welchman, the Allies were finally one step ahead of the Germans ? they could track Nazi troop movements and potential U-Boat attacks.?
"It was thanks to Ultra that we won the war," British Prime Minister Winston Churchill told King George VI, according to MSNBC.?
