Hearing set for Las Vegas Strip shootout suspect

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A man accused of firing gunshots that left a man dead and led to a deadly, fiery crash on the Las Vegas Strip faces extradition from California to Nevada.

Ammar Harris was expected to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday.

The 26-year-old self-described pimp was arrested in Los Angeles last Thursday, ending a weeklong manhunt that began after the Feb. 21 shooting and crash that killed three people and injured five others.

Authorities allege Harris was driving his black Range Rover SUV when he fired at least five shots into a Maserati sports car, killing Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., a rapper who called himself Kenny Clutch.

Police say the two men had argued minutes earlier in a casino valet area.

After Cherry was struck, the Maserati careened into a taxi that exploded in a spectacular fireball at Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, one of the most famous neon-lit crossroads in Las Vegas.

The cab driver and his passenger were killed.

A passenger in the Maserati was shot in the arm, and four people in four other vehicles were hurt, none seriously, in the chain-reaction crashes. Three women were in the SUV with Harris.

The crash closed the Strip for about 15 hours while police investigated.

Two days later, police located the SUV parked at an apartment complex near the crash scene, triggering the multi-state search for Harris.

Armed with an arrest warrant for three murder counts, law officers arrested Harris at an apartment in Los Angeles' Studio City area, hours after police found the last of the women who were with him in the SUV.

Harris is a convicted felon in South Carolina who shows fists full of money on Internet posts and boasts of a high-rolling lifestyle with prostitutes in Miami and Las Vegas.

Alabama police chief apologizes to Freedom Rider congressman

Decades after "Bloody Sunday," national leaders acknowledged America's continuing civil rights struggle by making the iconic march from Selma, Ala. to Montgomery. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Craig Giammona, NBC News

An Alabama police chief brought Rep. John Lewis to tears Saturday, apologizing to the noted civil rights leader for failing to protect the Freedom Riders during a trip to Montgomery in 1961.

Lewis and fellow civil rights activists were beaten by a mob after arriving at Montgomery's Greyhound station in May 1961.

On Saturday at ceremony at First Baptist Church, the city's current police chief, Kevin Murphy, apologized to Lewis and offered him his badge in a gesture of reconciliation, telling the longtime Georgia congressman that Montgomery police had "enforced unjust laws" in failing to protect the Freedom Riders more than five decades ago.

Lewis, who was arrested during civil rights protests in cities across the south, said it was the first time a police chief had apologized to him.

"It means a great deal," Lewis said. "I teared up. I tried to keep from crying."

Lewis and other members of Congress were taking part in the 13th Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama, a three-day event that also included trips to Selma, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.

Murphy said the decision to apologize was easy.

"For me, freedom and the right to live in peace is a cornerstone of our society and that was something that Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Congressman Lewis were trying to achieve" Murphy said. "I think what I did today should have been done a longtime ago. It needed to be done. It needed to be spoken because we have to live with the truth and it is the truth."

Murphy, who was asked to speak at the event only after Montgomery's mayor and director of public safety were unable to attend, said he wanted the Montgomery Police Department to be "heard in a different light than what history has recorded in years past."

"We're going to move forward as one Montgomery, one MPD. And we're going to continue to work at it," Murphy said. "There's still a lot of work to do, we know that. We, the police department, needs to make the first move to build that trust back in our community that was once lost because we enforced unjust laws.

Those unjust laws were immoral and wrong. But you know what? It's a new day. And there's a new police department and a new Montgomery here and now and on the horizon."

Montgomery Police Chief Kevin Murphy and Rep. John Lewis speak to the press after Murphy offered an apology to Lewis for the failure of Montgomery police officers to respond to attacks on the Freedom Riders during a trip to Montgomery in May 1961.

Rodman: Kim Jong Un wants Obama to 'call him'

In his first interview since returning to the U.S. from an unprecedented visit to North Korea last week, former NBA star Dennis Rodman said he bears a message for President Obama from the country's oppressive leader, Kim Jong Un.

"He wants Obama to do one thing: Call him," Rodman told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week." "He said, 'If you can, Dennis - I don't want [to] do war. I don't want to do war.' He said that to me."

The athlete also offered Kim some diplomatic advice for potential future talks with President Obama.

"[Kim] loves basketball. And I said the same thing, I said, 'Obama loves basketball.' Let's start there," Rodman said.

Rodman's comments come just days after the basketball star shocked the world with an unexpected trip to Pyongyang, North Korea, becoming the first known American to publicly meet with the mysterious Kim since he assumed command of the totalitarian nation after the death of his father, Kim Jong-Il in 2011.

The young leader has defied U.N. sanctions by continuing to develop North Korea's nuclear arms and missile program, which he says is aimed at the U.S.

Kim is often regarded as one of the world's most oppressive leaders, presiding over prison camps and allowing millions of his own people to starve.

Rodman likely now has more firsthand impressions of Kim than any other American. He offered some insight to Kim's personality this morning.

"He loves power. He loves control," Rodman said, of his new "friend." "But guess what? He doesn't want war. That's one thing he doesn't want."

PHOTOS: Kim Jong Un Through the Years

In a bizarre display of basketball diplomacy, Rodman went on the record to offer highest praise for Kim Thursday, telling reporters, "I love him. He's awesome." Today on "This Week," Rodman didn't backtrack on those comments.

"No, I'm not apologiz[ing] for him," Rodman said. "You know, he's a good guy to me. Guess what? He's my friend. I don't condone what he does ? [but] as a person to person - he's my friend."

PHOTOS: Dennis Rodman Goes to North Korea

Rodman traveled through Pyongyang with members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and a camera crew from the upcoming HBO series, "VICE." Kim warmly welcomed the Americans, with an itinerary that included ice skating, an aquarium visit and a long dinner and drinks.

During his visit, Rodman sat court side with Kim as they took in an exhibition basketball face-off with the Globetrotters and North Korean players. Kim, like his late father, is said to be a devoted basketball fan - especially for the 1990's-era Chicago Bulls championship teams, which included Rodman. Rodman stood up to give a speech to the basketball crowd, at one point telling Kim, "You have a friend for life."

Rodman also raised eyebrows back home when he complimented Kim's infamous family legacy, adding, "his grandfather and his father were great leaders."

But when Stephanopoulous pressed him on "This Week," Rodman clarified those controversial remarks.

"What I saw in that country ? I saw people respect him and his family. That's what I mean about that," he said on "This Week." "They're great leaders there."

Rodman drew a distinction between Kim and his predecessors.

"The kid is only 28 years old. Twenty eight," he said. "He's not his dad. Not his grandpa. He's 28 years old."

Despite the unlikely pairing, Rodman said he has something in common with Kim and the North Korean people: a love of basketball.

"I'm not a politician. Kim Jung Un & North Korean people are basketball fans," he tweeted. "I love everyone. Period. End of story."

Dennis Rodman Through The Years

The U.S. State Department had no involvement in the visit, and officials say they have no plans to debrief Rodman after his meeting with one of the world's most mysterious leaders. Col. Steve Ganyard, USMC (Ret.), a former deputy assistant secretary of state and ABC News consultant, told ABC's Martha Raddatz the State Department's decision is "ridiculous."

"There is nobody at the CIA who can tell you more personally about Kim Jong Un than Dennis Rodman, and that in itself is scary," Ganyard said.

Rodman told Stephanopoulos there are more trips to North Korea in his future.

"I'm not like a diplomat," Rodman said. "I'm [going to] go back, do one thing and find out more, what's going on. Find out more."

Stephanopoulos offered Rodman the latest report from the Human Rights Watch, which outlines North Korea's "dire human rights record" under Kim, to share with him during their next visit.

Rodman accepted the report, adding, "don't hate me. Don't hate me. Guess what? Don't hate me."

Backdrop meet Horse? | Ebonie K Photography

web1615-12Keriekpcard3-8

Congratulations Keri!! Keri opened her new vet clinic, Hudson Reykdal Veterinary Services just before the New Year and it offers Manitoba its first Full Service Mobile Vet Clinic! She has been working hard in the last half year planning her new clinic and designing the Mobile Vet Clinic. I met Keri through friend and associate Kat Dueck (AKA -the pet whisperer)- Keri was looking for images of her pets to be used as graphics on the outside of her mobile van, on her Website and on display in her clinic. So one day in late summer Kat and I headed up to her farm and set-up a full studio-including lights and backdrops in her barn/garage. We spent a good 8 hours capturing pictures of her cats, dogs and yes, even her horses! ?The horses spent the day watching in their stalls behind me as I photographed the ?production? ?until it was their time in the studio lights. I was actually really impressed with how well they did in front of the camera and lights-They sure were paying attention throughout the day! I thought I?d share just a handful of the images captured. ?Thanks go out to the very well trained ?Models? and of course associate Kat who rallied and got the attention of the ?models? while I snapped away!

Please feel free to check out Keri?s website. Your love for animals and your pets is just so evident, Keri, and I?m sure that will translate to much success in your business! Congrats again!

I?d also like to share a little recent clip of Keri and her mobile clinic in action. Keep up the great work Keri!

Dot Earth Blog: A Farewell to the New York Times Green Blog

12:08 p.m. | Updated |
With the posting Friday evening of ?A Blog?s Adieu,? The New York Times shut down the Green blog, which, through 5,364 posts, had been an excellent aggregator of environmental news and analysis that didn?t fit in the flow of conventional articles.

In a short addendum, the editors directed readers to other Times blogs that will pick up some of the slack:

Please watch for environmental policy news on the?Caucus?blog and energy technology news on the?Bits?blog.

They also provided a list of Twitter accounts of staff reporters who were regular contributors. [It's not a substitute for the blog, but I've created a "Green Blog Voices" Twitter list with relevant news staff but also the blog's many fine freelance contributors.]

From a logistical standpoint, the shutdown of Green was probably inevitable once the environment desk was closed in January. The two editors have new duties, and a blog (as I know too well) is a lot of work. [Read "The Changing Newsroom Environment" for more.]

But inevitability doesn?t take away the sting.

Curtis Brainard, who writes about science journalism for the Columbia Journalism Review, harshly criticized Times management for the move and posted an apologetic e-mail message sent by Nancy Kenney, the former deputy environment editor, to the blog?s contributors.

The news side of The Times has nine sports blogs; nine spanning fashion, lifestyles, health, dining and the like; four business blogs; four technology blogs (five if you include automobiles as a technology); and a potpourri of other great efforts, with four of my favorites being the Learning Network?blog, Scientist at Work, the?IHT Rendezvous blog?on global news and Lens, run by the paper?s photo staff. You can tour the paper?s blogosphere here.

I would like to have thought there was space for the environment in that mix, even though these issues are still often seen by journalists weaned on politics as a sidenote (remember Candy Crowley?s post-debate comment about ?all you climate change people??).

One suggestion. Before you write in to complain, also make sure your subscription to the paper is up to date.

Stewart Brand famously wrote that ?information wants to be free.?

But the time and effort required to gather, sift, analyze and convey information with authority, particularly on globe-spanning or contentious issues, is expensive.

Companies struggle to popularize mobile money

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Mobile money may seem like a hot concept, but consumers aren't warming to it.

At the world's largest cellphone trade show, here in Barcelona this week, the 70,000 attendees are encouraged to use their cellphones ?instead their keycards? to get past the turnstiles at the door. But very few people took the chance to do that. The process of setting up the phone to act as a keycard proved too much of a hassle.

It's a poor omen for an industry that's eager to have the cellphone replace both tickets and credit cards. Companies are building chips antennas into phones that let the gadgets interact with "tap to pay" terminals and other devices equipped with short-range sensors, like subway turnstiles. But getting the technology to do something useful and convincing people to adopt it is a slow process.

To make a payment in a store with your cellphone, "you need a lot of things to align," said Reed Peterson, who heads the Near-Field Communications initiative for the GSM Association, a global trade group for the wireless industry. The phone needs to be properly equipped with NFC hardware and software; the store needs to have the proper equipment and training. The phone company needs to support the transaction, and banks and payment processors need to be in on it.

Some of these things have fallen into place, Peterson said, but the network of commercial agreements that supports these payments needs to expand. And consumer demand remains elusive.

"I want to get to the point where the consumer goes into the store and says 'Show me only the phones that have NFC'," Peterson said.

Today, a buyer is quite likely to go into a store and ask for an iPhone, and that's an obstacle to NFC adoption. Apple Inc. is the lone holdout among major smartphone makers, and hasn't built NFC into any of its devices yet.

Visa, the global payments network, announced a coup at the show: it has struck a deal with Samsung Electronics to take charge of the "secure element" in the next flagship phone from the South Korean company. The Galaxy S IV is expected to be launched at an event in New York on Mar. 14, though the name has not been confirmed.

The "secure element" is sort of like a safe inside the phone. Whoever controls access to it decides which credit cards, transit passes or other verified "documents" the phone can store. A bank that wants to let customers use their Samsung smartphones as virtual credit cards will have to go through Visa.

Control of the secure element is a crucial battleground for NFC. The GSMA, which is dominated by cellphone carriers, advocates putting the secure element not in the phone itself, but in the subscriber identity module, or SIM card, which plugs into the phone to identify the user and supply a phone number to the network. SIM cards are issued and controlled by the carriers who would like to be the ones in control of the secure element.

While Visa, phone companies and Google (which has its own payment initiative) duel over the secure element, eBay Inc.'s PayPal is wondering what all the fuss is about. The online payment network thinks NFC is a lot more trouble than it's worth. The company isn't afraid to say so at the wireless industry tradeshow.

"If you want to change something, you have to solve problems that people have in everyday life," said David Marcus, the president of PayPal. "It's not like everyone is thinking 'Oh, I wish someone came up with something better'" than paper money and credit cards.

PayPal is putting a lot of effort into making cellphones central to the way we shop, but is focusing on the shopping experience itself, rather than payments. The company's ideal vision for buying a cup of coffee: You pull out your phone on the way to the store, fire up PayPal's app to order your double-skim latte and pay for it in advance. When you arrive at the counter, the barista has your picture and your coffee, and gives it to you right away. Then you're out the door.

Thirty years ago, Marcus said, store clerks knew the people in their neighborhood and greeted them by name.

"We think with this technology, we could recreate that personal connection," he said. "We feel this is going to leapfrog the efforts of NFC."
