Simple And Effective Weight Loss Tips Anyone Can Use | The ...

Losing weight is a serious struggle that can have serious health benefits. You will not be successful if you do not plan your program in details. When you take it seriously, you will see the results you want and need. If you truly want to lose weight, heed the guidance in this piece.

When you feel hungry, wait ten or fifteen minutes before you eat. Feelings of hunger can actually be thirst in disguise. Drink some water, then go take a walk for fifteen minutes. If you still feel hungry then you can eat.

Use a meat mallet on your steaks, pork chops and other cuts of meat. You can then separate it and cook smaller portions. This will also make meat more tender and you won?t have to add any extras to it.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but you must consume fat in order to burn fat. Not all fats are bad; fatty acids like Omega-3, 6, and 9 are noticeably absent from almost any preservative-laden food product on the shelf at the grocery store. These acids, found in legumes and fish, aid weight loss by lowering cholesterol and nourishing your cardiovascular system.

When on the phone, move around as much as possible. Don?t stay seated when on the phone. Instead, move around and stay active. Calisthenics are not required. Just get your body moving, and you?d be surprised at how much those calories will add up.

You don?t have to do traditional exercise if you want to lose weight. This tip is for people who dislike exercising just for the goal of the exercise itself. Do fun activities like taking the dog for a walk, playing football or riding a bike. This way, the exercise doesn?t seem boring or work-like.

Eat more low-calorie foods that are also filling. Having a salad, soup, or low-calorie vegetables such as tomatoes or carrot sticks before a meal will help you feel satisfied so you?ll eat less of the high-calorie main courses. Drinking coffee, unsweetened beverages, and water prior to meals works the same way.

When it comes down to it, weight loss is actually pretty easy. Effective weight loss requires you to consider the process a journey, in which every bit of progress is part of a much larger experience. Know that each and every activity from washing the dishes, to taking out the trash, to folding the laundry positively contributes to your success. You don?t want to spend all your time just laying on the couch.

Donate your old, biggeer clothes to charity since they are now too big for you. If you hold to these clothes, then you might think that it?s alright to put the weight back, and that you are safe because you still have those clothes should put the weight back on. By getting rid of these clothes, you end up forcing yourself to continue with your weight-loss routine.

If you?re dieting and you like to avoid mid-morning hunger cravings, try eating high protein breakfast as opposed to toast or bagels. Protein provides a feeling of fullness and can prevent you from wanting snacks in between meals.

You need to try not to eat three major meals every day. You need to make portion control an important part of your meal planning to ensure you do not overeat. Instead, eat five to six smaller meals, and you will be in a better position to succeed. That is because you won?t be as hungry when you eat. Also, aim for 250 calories per meal to stay efficient.

Set realistic goals when starting a diet. Just like with any other endeavor, setting unrealistic goals will only discourage you. If you try to loose 15 pounds in a few weeks, you are going to fail or be in very poor health. Try setting a goal that you can reach every week. If you break your long-term goal into small bits, you will have a better chance to succeed. Therefore, to stay on track with your weight loss, set weekly weight loss goals.

This article has now taught you that the keys to losing weight is effort, determination and a plan. By using the tips in this article, you will be able to successfully lose weight.

Lady Gaga Previews New Song From Car In New York

Mother Monster blasts track on the streets of the Big Apple for fans gathered around her SUV.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> was in her hometown on Sunday night and gave her fellow New Yorkers a special treat. Sitting in her car, she played a new track off her forthcoming album for gathered fans.</P><P>In barely audible footage posted online, the dance track plays in the background &#8212; the majority of what is heard in the video is the club-banging beat. Gaga sits in the backseat of an SUV as fans call the track "amazing." The 38-second clip ends with the Mother Monster driving away from her fans.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid:717202" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Shortly after the encounter, fans began tweeting about meeting the singer and getting the preview. One fan <a href="http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a394632/lady-gaga-plays-new-track-on-car-stereo-for-fans-in-new-york.html" target="_blank">wrote</a>, "Just met GaGa! She was playing a song from her new album! ... It was a very heavy dance/club song! The beat was f---ing insane!"</P><P>Another person who was there said that the song might end up being the first released off Gaga's forthcoming album. "I asked her if it was the new single she looked at me and shook her head yes and said shhhhh," the fan <a href="http://www.mtv.co.uk/news/lady-gaga/360229-lady-gaga-leaks-track-fans-new-york-city" target="_blank">tweeted</a>.</P><P>Gaga will reveal the name of her <a href="/news/articles/1686922/lady-gaga-new-album-title.jhtml">new album in September</a>. Last week she hinted that the first song off the LP is produced by longtime collaborator DJ White Shadow, who worked with Gaga on <i>Born This Way</i> singles "Born This Way" and "The Edge of Glory."</P><P>While fans might have to wait a little longer to hear more of this new track, Gaga has been playing a song called "Princess Die" while on tour. If this new untitled track is any indication, <a href="/news/articles/1689212/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">Gaga is focusing</a> on making pure dance music, something she implied while out on the road.</P><P>"Let's just say I feel, I feel that when I wrote <i>Born This Way,</i> I demonstrated a sense of maturity," she said. "And I feel that on the next album there's a lack of maturity &#8212; it's a tremendous lack of maturity or sense of responsibility."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Linux Audio Streaming: Your Online Business and Streaming Audio ...

After creating your online business, you may consider adding audio to your website or blog apart from using simply images and text message. Visitors to your site could possibly favor something more than merely reading material content on your website or blog.

Streaming audio effectively increases customer interaction. It improves the chances of turning potential clients into paying customers. Streaming audio clips integrated all over your site usually act to emphasize your product's usefulness to your customers. You can accompany an audio version to your downloadable e-product as a bonus or sell it on its own. Even audio customer testimonials can be included on top of the traditional written testimonials to help persuade your web visitors to purchase your products.

Streaming audio permits you to hear the audio files instantly before the file is downloaded completely. Streaming audio plays best with a continuous high-speed connection. Heavy traffic on that connection can disrupt the audio sometimes and it will only resume till the bandwidth of the network can contain it. Hence, the surfer's internet connection speed is vital and so is the size of the file. If your audio files are relatively big, you will require more hosting charges. You have to consider the price, disks space, bandwidth, reliablility and speed offered by streaming audio hosting companies before deciding which to hire.

You can also sign up with an internet radio station, embedding your site with its link. Some of the more well-known internet radio stations are pandora, slacker and grooveshark. Each time your site is frequented, you will provide your visitors with new audio content. This content is being updated by the radio station, with no effort on your part. Nowadays, with the latest iphone apps surfacing in the market, internet radio stations serve more small business audience. For example, your cellphone permits mp3 and podcasts that carry commercials selling products and services.

Another way is to stream music via organizing playlists. M3u files are playlist files, not actual music files themselves. They contain a list of music files. You can open and edit a file using notepad. If you are unsure, get some assistance from your programmers to link your songs in the playlist in your site. Your site's visitor can then listen to your songs or recordings one after another, buffered, streamed and played upon browsing your site.

You may stream your own mp3s recordings or music too. Ensure that you get the necessary permit to utilise this kind of streaming since the mp3 files can be downloaded.

Streaming audio will be advantageous to your internet enterprise if you have selected the ideal music, songs or recordings that can boost your revenue. Do some testing and fine-tuning to pick the right ones that best match your business. You cannot afford to lose your customers by playing audio files that are not favored by your potential clients.

Tenzin Norbu: Aspiring and Engaging Bodhicitta

Bodhichitta abides in two precious ways; Keep both of these in mind. The goal to become a Buddha for all Is what we first must find.
But having a goal bereft any Effort Will always leave us behind. With Effort seek the goal in practice; Employ the engaging kind.
Just as the difference between wishing to go and Truly going is known. Strive to possess the two Bodhichittas; Both of them must be shown.

As these verses of Ocean of Compassion state, there are two forms of bodhicitta -- aspiring bodhicitta and engaging bodhicitta. Aspiring bodhicitta is a complex cognitive and emotional pattern of feeling and believing. It is the pattern of feeling universal, unbiased love and compassion, and the belief that Buddhas have the greatest possible ability to lead everyone to true and lasting happiness and freedom from all suffering. The emotional elements of universal, unbiased love and compassion are strong motivating factors to act so as to benefit all others, but, unless one knows how to bring real benefit to others, one will not be able to help others effectively. Not knowing how to bring true benefit to others is like seeing someone who is drowning and strongly desiring to save that person but not knowing how to swim. Just as learning and practicing how to swim and do proper cardiopulmonary resuscitation are parts of the training that leads to becoming an effective lifeguard, each of the six perfections of patience, generosity, joyful effort, moral discipline, concentration and wisdom are parts of the training that leads to becoming a Buddha. Cultivating and practicing these six perfections until one becomes a Buddha is called "engaging bodhicitta."

In my last blog post, I explained that a patient person does not overcome anger by suppressing it -- rather, he or she eliminates the dysfunctional patterns of thinking that cause anger. Not every patient person is practicing the perfection of patience. A mother, for example, who responds with biased love rather than with anger to her child's misbehavior does not perform an act expressing the perfection of patience. This kind of behavior is an example of an imperfectly patient act, because it springs from the motive of biased love rather than the universal, unbiased love and compassion of bodhicitta motivation. Such an action is certainly commendable, but it is not meritorious to the same degree that a bodhisattva's actions are.

To practice any perfection, the thoughts and behaviors consistent with perfect behavior are intentionally chosen because they are steps on the path to becoming a Buddha. When bodhisattvas respond to someone's "outrageous behavior," they react lovingly and helpfully, because they know that by responding lovingly to someone's outrageous behavior they are building the capacity to become Buddhas and help everyone. Reacting lovingly to someone's non-virtuous behavior does not mean responding imprudently -- a bodhisattva very carefully protects his or her body, because a bodhisattva's body is a powerful tool to help others, and because universal, unbiased love includes loving oneself. Protecting one's body from harm out of bodhicitta motivation is actually an example of the perfection of generosity. So, interestingly, a bodhisattva who responds to someone's "outrageous behavior" without anger and with love for all acts both patiently act and generously. Each of the other five perfections of engaging bodhicitta must be understood in the same way -- each act is a perfection of any kind if and only if it is both a way to perform one of the six virtuous types of action and is chosen from bodhicitta motivation.

A generous act, obviously, is an act of giving something to someone other than oneself. An act of the perfection of generosity is an act of giving something to someone that one knows will advance both the giver and the receiver along the path to true and lasting happiness. To express the perfection of joyful effort, you must have the disposition to rejoice spontaneously whenever performing any perfect action, much like the immediate experience of joy felt by an athlete upon scoring a goal. Moral discipline is a combination of having made the decision, out of bodhicitta motivation, to renounce all moral flaws and drawing upon mental resources, when necessary, to block a desire to act non-virtuously. Concentration is resting the focus of one's mind upon a virtuous mental content, such as compassion, out of bodhicitta motivation. With concentration, our meditation sessions are very effective in developing virtuous states of mind and eliminating non-virtuous states of mind. The perfection of wisdom is the ability, acquired from bodhicitta motivation, to perceive the interdependent arising of all things and the understanding that the objects of our consciousness are like dreams, in that they have no reality independent of the mind perceiving them.

In summary, aspiring bodhicitta is the aspiration to become a Buddha for the benefit of all, and engaging bodhicitta is, with bodhicitta motivation, cultivating all six of the perfections and acting as the perfections require whenever relevant circumstances arise. In order to become a Buddha, you must employ engaging bodhicitta until you master all six of the perfections. The six perfections, collectively, are the necessary and sufficient causes of becoming a Buddha. The first five perfections are steps to Buddhahood, because they prepare the mind to be able to acquire wisdom, and, with the acquisition of wisdom, one becomes a Buddha.

Clara Shih: A New Hope, and Not Just for Yahoo!

Once again, Silicon Valley has created some buzz in the media.

Drowning out any news of product launches, business partnerships, strategic acquisitions, and even all those Google Glasses stories was a simple, straightforward press release announcing that longtime Google employee and VP Marissa Mayer had left her company of over a decade to join Yahoo! as CEO.

Though I never worked directly with Mayer, we're both women who followed similar paths, studying computer science at Stanford University and dedicating our professional careers to serving technology companies. With that in mind, I thought I'd provide some of my personal perspective on the exciting news.

First and foremost, this is a proud time for all of Silicon Valley. Technology may be traditionally perceived as a male-dominated industry, but it won't always be that way. Every day we see more and more powerful women leaders boasting outstanding achievements.

One that comes to mind is Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, the business-savvy complement to Mark Zuckerberg's obsessive product focus. Sheryl had a big moment during the Facebook IPO just a couple months ago, and women have been expanding their influence in the Valley since the '90s. For example, when it comes to tracking and predicting industry trends, very few -- women or otherwise -- can claim as much influence and respect as Mary Meeker, now a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

The list goes on and on, and it just grew more impressive with Yahoo!'s surprising announcement this week that its new CEO is Marissa Mayer, a woman who joined Google in 1999 as the search giant's 20th employee and first female engineer. And her accomplishments are impressive.

But this isn't all about gender. It's also not about the fact that Marissa is due to have her first baby in October. After all, most male CEOs in Silicon Valley have children without it being a big PR story; I look forward to the day when the same is true for women CEOs.

More important than either of those points is that we could be seeing the resurrection of a slipping Silicon Valley organization.

When it came to light in May that Yahoo! had hired a CEO who had significant falsehoods listed on his resume, Silicon Valley veteran Michael Arrington blogged that the company had "hit rock bottom":

It doesn't matter if Yahoo is a shadow of its former self. Employees still get up every morning and come to work and do their best in a difficult environment. These are good people -- not all of them have left or been terminated over the years. And they deserve a CEO that they can believe in.

And so does the [Silicon Valley] community.

This week, embodying the renewed sense of optimism that has lifted our community, Arrington's completely come around:

[T]he bloom is back on the rose at Yahoo.

It doesn't mean the company will find a way to win. But like I said, the whole Yahoo paradigm has shifted.

[...]

Fixing Yahoo will be difficult, particularly since the company seemed to have grown comfortable with its decline and no longer had any fight left in them.

I expect Mayer will be fixing all that sooner rather than later.

It's a good day for Yahoo.

To speak more broadly, Yahoo!'s decision will do wonders for the next generation of women in technology and business.

Many of Yahoo!'s 12,000 employees will feel reinvigorated to be led by someone with impressive technical skills and vision, but once the glow of excitement fades, Marissa and her company have serious, down-and-dirty work to do. It's not going to be a walk in the park at Yahoo!, a sluggish and aging tech giant that has gradually lost focus over the years.

But then again, what could be more admirable? Who could be a better role model for young women weighing their options, wondering whether they could work at great companies or even run with their own businesses?

Like many of my fellow entrepreneurs, I didn't create Hearsay Social with my co-founder Steve Garrity because it would be fun and easy, but because we're at our best when faced with enormous challenges. I expect similar motivations fueled Marissa's decision to try her hand at revitalizing Yahoo!.

Congratulations, Marissa. On behalf of the entire Silicon Valley community, and women around the world, I wish you the best of luck.

Article Publishing Is A Key Component Of Net Marketing | Hostel 333

Regularly when I am communicating with other webmasters and I bring up the topic of writing articles, I usually get a response like ?I?d rather have a root canal, I just cannot write?, or ?my spelling is horrible and my grammar is not a lot better?. In my view, the very first excuse is just a matter of attitude. The latter excuse falls on deaf ears due to the fact the key word processing programs have good spelling and grammar checking capabilities.

We?re not speaking about a thing that would qualify for the Pulitzer Prize in literature, just articles dealing with a topic that could be of interest to a group of individuals that also could come about to have an interest in your particular company proposition or activity.

Whilst not as dramatic as the college professor?s dilemma of ?publish or perish?, several Net marketers have located that the publicity and traffic that articles can bring to their sites is second only in significance to really generating sales.

When writing articles, start off out by clearly defining what you want to write about. Concentrate on the topic and the general message that you want to communicate. Sometimes you will start with a title and expand from there and other instances the title will be the last point you create.

Organize your material (be it information, thoughts, or opinions) into a logical sequence or order. Do not attempt for the finished product in the first draft. Just let your mind, and words, flow and get some stuff down on paper. This might take place in a single session or, for longer articles, it could be carried out in many rough draft sessions perhaps broken into logical sections of what will eventually grow to be your completed article.

As soon as you have completed the rough stuff, it really is time to make your corrections, smooth out the rough edges, and possibly do a small juggling in terms of organization. Run your text by way of the spelling/grammar checking tool of your word processor and make the suitable adjustments/corrections.

Now that the body of text that you have designed is ?technically clean? from a spelling/grammar standpoint and you have happy oneself with the organization, its time to do the final styling or polishing to make certain readability (that could or may not be a word, but I will claim poetic license and go ahead and use it). Read your report aloud to oneself and get a feel for the cadence or rhythm. The readability of the entire write-up can be influenced by altering the order of words and/or exchanging 1 like-meaning word for another. The final objective is to invite readership.

Several entrepreneurs and professionals use their articles as an important component in launching successful careers earning extremely substantial incomes. Don?t forget, with regard to writing articles, you happen to be much better than you believe you are?it really is all about attitude.

Mathematical Problem Solving and the Education System in ...

Singapore Math

Prior to reading chapter one of ?Mathematical Problem Solving? (Kaur, Yeap, Kapur, 2009) earlier this evening, if someone asked me what I knew about ?Singapore Math,? I would say I knew nothing about it. [1], [2] ?From perceptions of earlier readings, I might have added that it was a method of mathematics instruction that produced wonderful results for student?s in learning mathematics, at least since most people referenced it with a degree of reverence.

My brief reading of the first chapter now leads me to believe it is the teaching of mathematics with problem solving as its central focus, integrating standards and attributes of mathematical thinking. ?Further research revealed that the framework for Singapore Math is similar to?the process standards espoused by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), as well as the?National Research Council?s Five Strands of Mathematical Proficiency?in the U.S.,?both of which my students are required to reflect upon?as summer work. ?The following figure, taken from?Kaur et. al., 2009, illustrates the centrality of problem solving to Singapore Math. ?I find the title for the figure confusing since it does not depict curriculum, per se, but dimensions of mathematics practice that are necessary to understand mathematics in a meaningful manner. ?At the same time, it could simply refer to the framework used when the curriculum is taught, which is more likely the case. ?Nonetheless, its success in Singapore suggests it has more than a minor amount of merit.

Singapore Math?s Role in Singapore

Singapore Math serves a mission critical purpose in Singapore. ?More than nearly any other country, Singapore realizes the essential role mathematics plays in its continued success as the following excerpt from Mathematical Problem Solving (Kaur et. al., 2009)?reveals.

The vision of the Ministry of Education in Singapore is Moulding the Future of the Nation i.e. education is perceived as critical to the survival of the country. Mathematics and other school subjects are platforms for students to develop a set of competencies that hold them in good stead to function well in the type of economy that Singapore engages in. It is no wonder that the Ministry of Education has over the years introduced a slew of initiatives, two of which are Thinking School, Learning Nation (TSLN) and Teach Less, Learn More (TLLM). TSLN aims to develop good thinking through school subjects. TLLM encourages teachers to reduce the content taught via direct teaching but instead engage students in meaningful activities so that they use knowledge to solve problems and whilst solving problems extend their knowledge through inquiry. Thus, a shift in the emphasis of mathematics teaching and learning from acquisition of skills to ?development and improvement of a person?s intellectual competence? (p.5, Ministry of Education, 2006a), makes it necessary for mathematics education to make mathematical problem solving and its instruction its focus. It is the aim of this book to provide readers with a range of ideas on how this can happen in the mathematics classroom.

Mathematics provides the tools necessary to solve problems that left unchecked could annihilate entire civilizations; to design systems that provide for the health, safety, and welfare of a country?s inhabitants; or to protect a nation from enemies, both foreign and domestic.

While many countries recognize the necessity to innovate to survive, few have developed as comprehensive a mathematics framework as Singapore for educating its citizens. ?I hope that the efforts of the Common Core State Standards, with its inclusion of mathematical practices derived from NCTM and NRC alike elevates our nation?s commitment to mathematics instruction for all public school students that is as effective as Singapore Math seems to be for Singapore.

I plan to investigate Singapore Math further to see how successful it truly has been, as well as understand its pros and cons. ?If anyone knows of any definitive references for Singapore Math that might shed the most current light on these items, please let me know.

Was Meloni's talent wasted on 'True Blood'?

John P. Johnson / HBO

Christopher Meloni stars as Roman on season five of "True Blood."

By Ree Hines

Before the current season of HBO?s ?True Blood? kicked off, the big Bon Temps news was that former ?Law & Order: Special Victims Unit? star Christopher Meloni would be trading his badge for fangs and bringing new blood to ?True Blood.? It was quite the casting boon for the show considering Meloni?s past primetime successes, including his stint on the HBO classic, ?Oz,? and his reputation for playing the perfect attention-grabbing tough guy no matter which side of the law his character?s on.

(Spoiler alert! If you didn?t watch Sunday night?s episode of ?True Blood? don?t read on.)

But the latest ?True Blood? twist could have some Meloni fans wondering why the show?s powers-that-be brought him onboard at all. After just a few weeks of mounting tensions and teases of drama-to-come with Meloni?s undead alter ego Roman, the main man from the Authority found himself pinned under the pointy end of his own silver-tipped stake on Sunday night?s show.

Returning villain Russell Edgington, aka the fallen Vampire King of Mississippi, did the dirty work in the episode?s shocking final seconds. So much for a season full of epic battles between the two vamps. And so much for Meloni, as the ?true death? usually means a true exit from the show.

But did Roman really fall to the true death? It sure looks that way, but despite a little blood and a lot of contortions, Roman wasn?t shown erupting in a geyser of blood and vampire guts the way most of the night crawlers do. So maybe there?s still a little hope to be had. Maybe.

Otherwise the question remains: did ?True Blood? waste good thing with Meloni? Take our poll below and share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Did ?True Blood? waste good thing by getting rid of Meloni?s character so soon?

Will Facebook's Move Into Job Postings Give LinkedIn A Run For Its Money?

Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB), which is expected to claim one-seventh of humanity -- a user base of 1 billion -- in its grasp next month, is trying to give professional networking site LinkedIn Inc. (NYSE: LNKD) a run for its money with a proposed entry into the job-recruiting market.

The $68.78 billion-cap social networking giant plans to launch a new job search application in early August, according to sources familiar with the matter. The job board will make want ads available for search to millions of Facebook users by aggregating the postings of third-party providers, according to a Wall Street Journal report released last Friday. ?

Facebook's proposed plan could pose a grave threat to LinkedIn if the job board proposal evolves into a full-scale endeavor, the sources said, requesting anonymity as the plan remains confidential.

Some analysts, however, predict that the on-the-pipeline job search application will not eat into LinkedIn's market share. Most people consider LinkedIn the primary forum for job searches and career networking opportunities, according to a new analyst note from J.P. Morgan.

Furthermore, many Facebook users are becoming increasingly displeased with what they call an intrusion into their privacy and an exploitation of their personal data. People who wish to segregate their personal and professional lives will remain loyal to LinkedIn. Others would balk at the idea of a new job posting appearing publicly on their news feeds when they might wish to keep their job hunt under wraps.

The new job board plan is not Facebook's first attempt at tapping into a global job recruitment industry that is estimated to be as big as $4.3 billion. Last October, Facebook reached out to the U.S. Labor Department, vying for a partnership providing job-hunting resources by developing systems where postings could be delivered virally through the site, free of cost.

A Facebook official, who asked not to be identified, said the new initiative is an extension of the partnership with the Labor Department -- an alliance that could help Facebook gain more traction at a time of persistently high unemployment.

But analysts expect specialized job boards, like those offered at LinkedIn, to be more attractive to recruiters who seek talented and high-quality job candidates. ?

The social networking company is still working on the details of the plan. That involves decisions about posting job ads on users' news feeds and monetizing the service in the future.

LinkedIn shares were hit hard by the reports. They plunged 5.40 percent to close at 102.98 in late-afternoon trading on Monday. Facebook shares marginally rose 1.39 percent to close at 32.17.

Is China really the world's top economy? Much of the world thinks so

But much of the world would be wrong, according to recent study. China still lags far behind the US in GDP and personal wealth.?

They are wrong, of course, at least for the time being. America?s economy is much larger than China?s however you measure it, and when it comes to personal wealth, there is no contest.

But a recent 21-country survey by the Pew Research Center offers a snapshot of global perceptions of power, and the results are sobering for the United States.

World's top 5 economies. Where is China?

Americans themselves are almost evenly split over who they perceive to be the premier global economic heavyweight: 40 percent say the US, 41 percent say China. (Interestingly, the Chinese have no such illusions about themselves ? they put America ahead by a margin of 48 to 29.)

Europeans seem most overawed by the China hype, with 62 percent of Germans putting China at the top of the heap, compared with just 13 percent who still see America as the world?s top economic power. In Britain the split is 58-28, in Spain it?s 57-26.?

Worldwide, 42 percent of respondents put China ahead of America; 36 percent perceived it the other way around.

That 42 percent of respondents are off the mark. There are different ways to measure the size of a national economy, but even using the system most generous to the Chinese, called Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), the US economy was nearly half as big again as its nearest rival, the Chinese one, in 2010, according to the IMF. US Gross Domestic Product weighed in at $14.5 trillion against China?s $10.1 trillion, according to the September 2011 IMF report.?

If you go by straightforward GDP, America?s economy is two-and-a-half times as big as China?s according to the World Bank. And if you compare personal wealth, well, there is no comparison.

America?s per capita GDP came in at nearly $50,000 last year, while China?s was just over $8,000 at the most generous estimate ? about the same as Ecuador and Belize.

Of course you could use other criteria than mere size to judge which nation is the world?s leading economic power; innovation, for example.

But China still lags well behind the US in that field too. And when it comes to how much each country has invested abroad, Americans account for 20 percent of global foreign direct investment and the Chinese for only about 1.5 percent.

When it comes to energy, dynamism, and growth potential, the Chinese do look more impressive. And, of course, China?s population is five times bigger than America?s. At current growth rates, China probably will have the biggest economy in the world (measured on the basis of PPP) within 15 years.

But it hasn?t happened yet, whatever people around the world may believe.

Senex Scores A Double Oil Strike In Australia's Cooper Basin

Australia's Senex Energy said Wednesday that it has scored a double oil strike in the onshore Cooper Basin, South Australia.?

The company's first score was with an intersected 13 feet (4 meter) gross oil column in the Snatcher-5 appraisal well on PEL 111.?

?

Net oil pay of 7 feet (2.4 meters) was interpreted from wire line logs, with the well recovering 2.6 barrels of oil and minor oil-mud emulsion on testing. The well has been cased and suspended to allow for further evaluation of its use.?

?

The drilling rig, Ensign Rig 48, is now being moved to the Mustang-1 site in PEL 111, around (2 miles) 3 kilometers southwest of the Snatcher field.?

?

Senex holds a 60-percent stake in PEL 111, while Australia's Beach Energy holds the remaining 40-percent stake.

?

Senex's second score came with an intersected 20 feet (6 meter) gross oil column in the Cuisinier-6 appraisal well on the Barta Block of ATP 725P. Wire line logs confirmed the presence of an 18 feet (5.6 meter) gross oil column in the oil-bearing sands of the Murta formation with an interpreted net oil pay of 12 feet (3.8 meters).?

?

The drilling rig, Saxon Rig 184, is now being moved to the Cuisinier North-1 appraisal well, around (2 miles) 3 kilometers northeast of the Cuisinier-1 discovery well.?

?

"The well is to be cased as a future oil producer," Canada's Bengal Energy, one of the partners of ATP 752P, said in a statement.?

?

Australia's Santos is the operator of ATP 752P and the company holds a 45-percent interest. The remaining stake is held by Bengal (25-percent), Senex (15-percent) and Arrow Energy (15-percent).?

Quantum computing, no cooling required: Room-temperature quantum bits store data for nearly two seconds

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? It's a challenge that's long been one of the holy grails of quantum computing: how to create the key building blocks known as quantum bits, or qubits, that exist in a solid-state system at room temperature.

Most current systems, by comparison, rely on complex and expensive equipment designed to trap a single atom or electron in a vacuum and then cool the entire system to close to absolute zero.

A group of Harvard scientists, led by Professor of Physics Mikhail Lukin and including graduate students Georg Kucsko and Peter Maurer and postdoctoral researcher Christian Latta, say they've cracked the problem, and they did it by turning to one of the purest materials on Earth: diamonds.

Using a pair of impurities in ultra-pure, laboratory-grown diamonds, the researchers were able to create quantum bits and store information in them for nearly two seconds, an increase of nearly six orders of magnitude over the life span of earlier systems. The work, described in the June 8 issue of Science, is a critical first step in the eventual construction of a functional quantum computer, and has a host of other potential applications.

"What we've been able to achieve in terms of control is quite unprecedented," Lukin said. "We have a qubit, at room temperature, that we can measure with very high efficiency and fidelity. We can encode data in it, and we can store it for a relatively long time. We believe this work is limited only by technical issues, so it looks feasible to increase the life span into the range of hours. At that point, a host of real-world applications become possible."

In addition to a practical quantum computer, Lukin envisions the system being used in applications that include "quantum cash" (a payment system for bank transactions and credit cards that relies on the coding of quantum bits to thwart counterfeiters) and quantum networks (a highly secure communications method that uses quantum bits to transmit data).

"This research is an important step forward in research toward one day building a practical quantum computer," said Kucsko, who works in Lukin's lab and is one of two first authors of the paper. "For the first time, we have a system that has a reasonable timescale for memory and simplicity, so this is now something we can pursue."

The groundwork for Lukin's breakthrough was laid several years ago, when researchers discovered that nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, atomic-scale impurities in lab-grown diamonds, behave in the same way as single atoms. Like individual atoms, each center possesses a spin, which can be polarized, similar to on a bar magnet. Using lasers, researchers are able not only to control the spin, but to detect its orientation as it changes over time.

But the idea of using the NV centers to form the backbone of a quantum computer simply wasn't practical, largely because they can only hold data for about one-millionth of a second before their quantum properties -- and any data they may have held -- are lost.

The culprit, Lukin said, was another impurity in the diamond crystal.

In initial experiments, the team used diamonds that contained 99 percent carbon-12 atoms, which have no spin. The remainder, however, was made up of carbon-13 atoms, a tricky isotope that contains a spin in the atom's nucleus. Though weak, the interaction with those spins was causing the NV centers' short life spans.

With this latest research, however, Lukin and his team turned what was once a challenge -- the interaction between the NV center and carbon-13 atoms? -- to their advantage.

"The nuclear spin of the carbon-13 makes an ideal quantum bit, because they are very isolated," Lukin said. "Because they interact with so few outside forces, they have relatively long coherence times. Of course, the same properties that make them ideal qubits also make them difficult to measure and manipulate."

The solution Lukin and his team came up with was surprisingly elegant. Rather than trying to find a way to measure the spin of the carbon atoms, they used the NV center to do it for them.

Working with researchers at Element Six, a British-based company that specializes in manufacturing artificial diamonds, they developed a new technique to create crystals that were even more pure: 99.99 percent carbon-12. Researchers then bombard the crystal with nitrogen to create the NV center, which interacts with a nearby carbon-13 atom.

The result of that interaction is that the NV center mirrors the state of the carbon atom, meaning researchers can encode a bit of information into the spin of the atom, then "read" that data by monitoring the NV center.

"The system we've developed uses this very local probe, the NV center, to allow us to monitor that spin," Lukin said. "As a result, for the first time, we can encode a bit of information into that spin, and use this system to read it out."

However, encoding information into the spin of the carbon-13 atom and reading it out using the NV center is only a step on the road to a quantum computer. To truly be useful, researchers had to determine how to take advantage of the atom's quantum properties -- that is, its ability to occupy two states simultaneously.

That ability to be in two states at the same time is a key principle of quantum computers. As opposed to traditional computers, which encode bits of information as either zero or one, quantum computers rely on atomic-scale quantum mechanics to give quantum bits both values at once. That property, in theory, allows quantum computers to perform multiple computations in parallel, making them vastly more powerful than traditional computers, which perform operations in sequence.

The solution, Lukin explained, was a two-step process.

The first step is to cut the connection between the NV center and the carbon atom. Using massive amounts of laser light, researcher are able to effectively keep the NV center occupied and prevent it from interacting with the carbon atom. In step two, the diamond crystal is bombarded with a specific set of radio frequency pulses, suppressing the interaction between the carbon-13 atom and any nearby atoms.

"By limiting interactions with the carbon-13 atom, we can extend the life of the qubit and hold the data for longer," Lukin said. "The end result is that we're able to push the coherence time from a millisecond to nearly two seconds."

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology and the Max-Planck-Institut f?r Quantenoptik also participated in the research. Funding was provided by theNational Science Foundation, the Center for Ultracold Atoms, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Element 6, the Packard Foundation, the European Union, the Swiss National Science Foundation, and the Sherman Fairchild Foundation.
