Beryl set to dump rain, regain storm status

Tropical Depression Beryl is expected to dump a foot of rain in parts of the Southeast coast on Tuesday, a day after drenching areas and claiming the life of an 18-year-old who was swallowed up by a rogue wave.

Beryl is also expected to build up strength and "could regain tropical storm status" on Wednesday as it approaches South Carolina, the National Hurricane Center stated.

The body of Ritchy Dauphin washed ashore Tuesday morning, about 12 hours after he went missing in violent surf near Daytona Beach, Fla., NBC affiliate WESH-TV reported. Dauphin and a friend had ignored the rip tides and high surf.

"They were pretty far away," Tacorey Williams, one of Dauphin's friends, told WESH. "I don?t know how many feet, but they were above waist."

"He tried to help," she said of the friend with Dauphin, "but the wave pushed him (Dauphin) farther" out.

Beryl left little property damage after making landfall with 70 mph winds around midnight Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.

But 20,000 customers remained without electricity in the city Monday evening.

Moreover, up to 10 inches of rain are expected from northern Florida to southeastern North Carolina on Tuesday. Some areas could see 15 inches.

By early Tuesday, Beryl, which had weakened to a tropical depression, had maximum sustained winds near 30 mph. It was centered about 10 miles northwest of Valdosta, Ga., and was moving north at about 2 mph.

A frontal system moving south from the Great Lakes is expected to cause the storm do a U-turn and push it back out to sea later in the week.

The Atlantic's six-month storm season officially begins Friday, but the season got off to an early start with Tropical Storm Alberto forming earlier this month off the coast of South Carolina.

Jacksonville, because of its location on an inward curve in the Florida coast, rarely takes a direct hit from a tropical storm or hurricane.

"I hope this is not a sign of things to come," said Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla. "Normally the hurricanes are forming out in the Atlantic and as they come toward the coast of the United States, the Gulfstream has a tendency to turn them north."

The rain was welcome on the Georgia coast for bringing some relief from persistent drought. According to the state climatologist's office, as of May 1, rainfall in Savannah was 15 inches below normal for the past 12 months.

Emergency officials said minor flooding was reported near the coast, but the ground was quickly soaking up the water. Winds had died down considerably.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Ray Parker, emergency management director for coastal McIntosh County south of Savannah, who said the worst damage came by trees falling on two homes overnight. "Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

Ultra Electronics, TCS announces High-Capacity Radio (HCR) with ...

CANSEC, Ottawa, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Ultra Electronics, TCS, based in Montreal, Canada, has announced a new version of the Ultra High-Capacity Radio (HCR) now capable of 400 Mbps of bandwidth throughput. The HCR is a small form-factor and highly ruggedized tactical radio that delivers high bandwidth throughput over long distances using point-to-point microwave wireless technology. The radio's dramatic increase in bandwidth capability over previous generation radios is expected to accelerate the adoption of handheld devices and next-generation applications at the tactical edge, a key trend within many militaries around the world. The new radio's much smaller form factor requires fewer assets to deploy and less logistical support than previous generation HCLOS radios, providing users with secure voice, data, video and sensor backhaul communications in difficult,? hard to reach, operating environments.

The HCR incorporates and improves on the best features of Ultra's battle-proven AN/GRC-245 and AN/GRC-512 radios to form a new platform that can perform multiple roles.? The single box mast mount radio supports the roles of a High-Capacity Line-of-Sight (HCLOS) radio relay, including spectrum efficiency and long range waveforms, as well as a true full-band Electronic Counter Counter Measure (ECCM) radio relay. Therefore, it effectively provides two radio types in a single common platform, enabling each relay vehicle to quickly mix and match each mode to suit battlefield conditions.? As a Software-Defined Radio (SDR), the HCR's unique architecture facilitates technology insertions while allowing for interoperability with legacy platforms, including the Ultra AN/GRC-245 and AN/GRC-512 radios.

Iwan Jemczyk, President of Ultra Electronics, TCS commented:
"The new version of the Ultra HCR introduces truly breakthrough technology in its domain and represents the culmination of Ultra's forty years of experience delivering tactical communications solutions. The radio's small form factor, significant bandwidth throughput capability and its ability to evolve over time, opens doors to new applications at all levels of the tactical communications chain."

Ultra Electronics, TCS
Ultra Electronics, TCS, part of the Ultra Electronics group, is a global leader in tactical communication systems, including high-capacity radio communications and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems. Ultra TCS supplies dependable, reliable and powerful communications equipment for tactical military and defence system applications. The company's products are tailored to meet or exceed military requirements in order to ensure that reliable, effective and robust communications can be deployed in the most rugged of environments. Ultra TCS is proud to work with leading system integrators to provide the best communications systems and services to be integrated within any military architecture and fielded as part of any deployment scenario in the world.

Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3

ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 -- possibly the version number for Android's next iteration, Jelly Bean. There are several more hints adding credence to these benchmark results, including the fish-based "grouper" codename, which follows the Stingray moniker that was handed to the Motorola Xoom ahead of its reveal. We're just itching to know whether it'll still manage a sub-$300 price-tag.

973,086 iOS devices were jailbroken in a single weekend thanks to Absinthe 2.0, which was released on Friday. Chronic-Dev, one half of the Jailbreak Dream Team tweeted the announcement yesterday, adding that 211,401 of those freed were third-generation iPads. If you want to loosen your own Apple-branded handheld from the clutches of Cupertino's control, then the warranty-worrying software is still available -- with the promise that it's so easy, your grandma could do it.

FIX Lee University ready to move to NAIA's Southern States Athletic Conference

Lee University is moving on up.

The longtime NAIA school in Cleveland was unanimously accepted Friday as a member of the Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II, pending expected approval by the national association. Lee would play one more school year in the NAIA's Southern States Athletic Conference and then have an inaugural year in the GSC without being eligible for league championships or postseason play.

"We have been discussing the move to NCAA DII for the last two years, and very intently for the past year," Lee president Dr. Paul Conn said Saturday from Lewiston, Idaho, where the baseball Flames are in the NAIA World Series. "I discussed it with the board of directors in its January 2012 meeting, and in its meeting on May 4 I recommended that we pursue DII membership in the Gulf South, and they authorized me to do so.

"We explored membership in two other DII conferences and had positive conversations with each," Conn continued. "Ultimately, however, we decided that the Gulf South is the strongest conference in this region, and the best fit for us, because of the size of its schools, the mix of public and private institutions, the high quality of athletic competition at the national level and its strong tradition of presidential leadership."

Shorter University from the SSAC and Union University in Jackson, Tenn., are making the move this coming year to the Gulf South.

Conn noted that a GSC committee including league commissioner Nate Salant, West Alabama's president and Alabama-Huntsville's and Delta State's athletic directors visited the Lee campus earlier this month and reported favorably to the GSC's expansion committee.

Other current league members are Christian Brothers, North Alabama, Valdosta State, West Florida and West Georgia.

With more than 4,500 students, Lee is the largest private university besides Vanderbilt in Tennessee, and it has grown immensely in buildings and facilities during Conn's 26 years as president. It has won the Commissioner's Cup for the best overall athletic program in the SSAC six of the last seven years.

Salant's statement Friday called Lee "one of the best NAIA schools in the country, not only from an athletic perspective but also from an academic one. Lee is not your typical private school in that is very large, has a tremendous following in the community and is in very good financial shape." He further praised Lee's emphasis on women's sports as an attraction for his league.

"The action of the Gulf South Conference opens the door for us to begin a process that we believe will raise the level of athletics at Lee," Conn said. "We will file an official application with the NCAA this week and are optimistic that they will act favorably, although that is far from a sure thing.

"We enjoy our relationship with the SSAC. It is a fine conference, and we hate to leave it. But we feel that Lee's trajectory for the past two decades has been always to become better and to operate at a higher level in every way, including athletics, and moving to the NCAA DII is the natural way for us to do that."

Lee has won the last four NAIA national championships in women's soccer, and two-time NAIA player of the year Jamie Achten was honored last weekend by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as co-female athlete of the year for the state.

Lee also has made final fours in baseball, basketball and volleyball while regularly garnering national qualifiers or high rankings in softball, golf, men's soccer, tennis and cross country.

Conn acknowledged that the move "will be a big challenge" in "competing against some very strong institutions" but added that "our athletes and coaches have earned an opportunity to test themselves at this level."

Said athletic director Larry Carpenter, a former Christian college basketball All-American and coach at the school: "I've been part of Lee athletics for 37 years and have witnessed many historic events during that time. The invitation to join the Gulf South Conference marks yet another event. We've enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the SSAC and NAIA but understand the challenge that comes by playing in the most competitive conference in NCAA II.

"The GSC schools are consistently vying for national championships and this year alone have already won won national title and had a national finalist."

But you might wanna grab a Kleenex before watching.

The only questioning remaining:

Which is more original and romantic: This set-up, or the video we posted one year ago of the movie trailer proposal?

Beginning of the end for Internet anonymity?

If the bill passes, get ready to hand over your full name and home address

Anonymity is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the United States was founded, in part, thanks to Thomas Paine's anonymously written, pro-revolution pamphlet?Common Sense. On the other hand, 12-year-olds who post anonymously on the internet can be rather unpleasant and?cause real problems by cyberbullying. Whether you think the good outweighs the bad, this news is troubling indeed: A far-reaching bill introduced in the New York State Senate could end the practice of posting online once and for all.

Sen. Thomas F. O'Mara / NY SenateIntroduced by New York State?Sen. Thomas F. O'Mara (R?Big Flats),?S6779 would require that any anonymous post online is subject to removal if the poster refuses to post ? and verify ? their legal name, their?IP address,?and their home address. From the (likely well intentioned) bill:

"A web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate. All web site administrators shall have a contact number or e-mail address posted for such removal requests, clearly visible in any sections where comments are posted."

Critics are quick to point out how dangerous and ineffective the anti-privacy bill would be in the off chance that it somehow passes.? After all, IP addresses do nothing to verify a person's identity, and including your home address on a controversial internet post could open you up to real-life threats.

In effect, the bill is an?online stalker's dream. Of course, the most likely result of the bill's passage would just be the full-scale elimination of all comment systems everywhere, because the system is an unworkable burden on both the poster and the "web site administrators" who would need to respond to ludicrous take down requests at all times of the day.

30-year mortgage rate at 3.78, another record low

By Al Olson

Mortgage rates have continued to fall over the past week,?again setting a record low for a 30-year contract, mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday.?

The 30-year benchmark dipped to 3.78, down from 3.79 a week ago. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage remained unchanged from last week at 3.04 percent. ?

"Mortgage rates were virtually unchanged this week with fixed-rate loans remaining at record lows and helping to drive homebuyer affordability," said Frank Nothaft, vice president and chief economist for Freddie Mac. "The National Association of Realtor's Housing Affordability Index reached an all-time record high in the first quarter of this year since records began in 1970. In April, existing home sales rose to the highest rate since January with an annualized rate of 4.62 million homes with purchases increasing in all four Census Regions," Nothaft added.?

As the rates continue to fall, there are some signs that the housing industry is slowly starting to rebound.?

Existing-home sales rose 3.4 percent from March to April, the National Association of Realtors reported Wednesday.?

Year over year, home sales were 10 percent higher in April while median home prices touched $177,400, a 10.1 percent spike from April 2011, the NAR said.

But it's not all rosy on the homefront.?Nearly 16 million homeowners owed more on their mortgages than their home was worth in the first quarter, or nearly one-third of U.S. homeowners with mortgages. That?s a $1.2 trillion hole in the collective home equity of American households, msnbc.com's John Schoen reported on Wednesday.?

Busting Automotive Myths In Bremen Indiana | TMT Automotive

Myths passed around our Bremen Indiana community start with a grain of evidence and are then built up with a lot of imagination and very elastic logic. And the internet is a breeding ground for automotive myths. Some bloggers recall the SUVs of yesteryear and declare their modern decedents to be virtually maintenance free and that anyone who says otherwise is out to rip you off.

To get the truth about auto myths you hear around the Bremen area, come over to TMT Automotive.
You?ll find us at 1455 West Plymouth Street , Bremen, Indiana 46506.
Give us a call at 574-546-5122 to make an appointment for your next auto service.

Let?s examine a couple of the more popular rants and look at the truth behind them.

The first one is that the chassis no longer needs lubrication for suspension, steering and the driveline. They declare that anyone who has charged you for lubrication is a charlatan.

The truth on which this myth is based is that many new cars come from the factory with sealed joints and cannot be greased. However, there are still some grease points on many cars around Bremen. A grease fitting may have been installed in conjunction with a repair. And most trucks and truck-based SUVs driving in Bremen still require chassis lubrication. This is because they are more heavy duty and proper greasing is still required to keep them going.

Another common rant you?ll hear around Bremen is that modern cars don?t need tune-ups. That depends on your definition of a ?tune-up?, which has changed as technology has progressed. Before engine control computers, electronic ignition and fuel injection, a tune up meant replacing mechanical parts that wore out. TMT Automotive would manually adjust fuel and air mix and timing. When these adjustments were off, spark plugs would foul and need to be replaced.

This definition just doesn?t apply to modern vehicles. Service centers like TMT Automotive generally consider a tune-up to be the major service visit, recommended by your manufacturer, every 30,000 miles or so.

Of course you can?t lubricate a sealed joint. Of course you can?t adjust a carburetor if your car doesn?t have one. You probably don?t need to change spark plugs every year if your manufacturer says they can go 30,000 miles. What are these bloggers getting so worked up about?

The danger with these modern-day myths, is that they prevent people in our local Bremen community from taking care of the routine preventive auto maintenance that manufactures recommend. Check out this partial list of things you still need to do to take care of your car. How many of them are really any different today than they were 20 or 30 years ago?

Oil change, cooling system service, transmission service, tire balancing, tire rotation, wheel alignment, suspension service, power steering service, proper tire inflation, brake service, differential service, battery maintenance, engine air filer, PCV valve, breather element, fuel filter, belts, hoses, timing belt, windshield wipers . . .

You get the picture. Your SUV is still a machine that needs to be maintained. And, hey, your service advisors at TMT Automotive have always adapted to keep pace with automotive technology. Next time you come across an angry voice about your car care, talk to your Bremen service advisor at TMT Automotive, or do some research of your own.

BALTIMORE (AP) ? As trainer of the winner and the runner-up in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, Todd Pletcher enjoyed a double-dose of glee Friday.

In Lingerie charged to victory in the $300,000 race, holding off Disposablepleasure to win by 1? lengths.

"That was a big effort to run 1-2 like that. I'm pleasantly happy," Pletcher said. "I think (In Lingerie) made a big step forward to be one of the leaders in her division today."

When In Lingerie returned to the winner's circle, she was bleeding from a cut on her lower right front leg. The leg was bandaged by a veterinarian, and the filly was walked back to her barn.

Pletcher later said In Lingerie nicked a blood vessel in her Pastern when she stumbled out of the gate, adding, "She's fine."

The Grade 2 race is for 3-year-old fillies.

It was the third career win in four tries for In Lingerie, who stumbled early but made up the difference with a deft ride by John Valazquez.

"Johnny had no choice but to put her out pretty wide on the backside," Pletcher said. "I thought in the top of the stretch she was in pretty good shape, and she made a strong run in the stretch."

Valazquez said: "I just wanted to get good position into the first turn, and we did. After that, it was pretty easy for us."

In Lingerie stormed past pace-setter Mamma Kimbo to finish the 1 1-8 miles in 1:52.07. The filly was coming off a win in the March 24 Bourbonette Oaks.

Pletcher previously won the Black-Eyed Susan in 2005 with Spun Sugar and in 2007 with Panty Raid.

The daughter of Empire Maker, In Lingerie came to Pletcher after being purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber following her maiden victory at Turfway Park on Jan. 12.

She ran second in an optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 25. One month later, she led from start to finish in the Bourbonette Oaks.

Disposablepleasure, meanwhile, enjoyed her best finish in three races this year.

"She finally ran the way we expected all winter," Pletcher said.

It was the first loss in three career races for Mamma Kimbo, who is trained by Bob Baffert. Mamma Kimbo bolted in front from the gate but faded to fourth behind third-place finisher Wildcat's Smile.

Mamma Kimbo, whose previous races were six furlongs and 1 1/16 miles, couldn't adjust to the longer trip.

"It was a little far for her," Baffert said. "She was trying, but it's just too far. She can get it with the right conditions. I knew it was a bit beyond her limitations."

Baffert will look to make amends Saturday with favorite Bodemeister in the Preakness.

In Lingerie paid $9.80, $5 and $4.80. Disposablepleasure returned $7.20 and Wildcat's Smile, with Rosie Napravik aboard, returned $8.60 to show.

Facebook?s IPO movie better than 'Social Network'

A short documentary now playing on the Internet is the best movie about Mark Zuckerberg yet. It?s studded with clues to the workings of Zuckerberg?s brain, and possibly even clues to the future of Facebook, which makes its initial public stock offering on Friday.

The film is called ?Facebook IPO Roadshow,? and it runs a little over 30 minutes. The ingenious and disturbing film was conceived as the centerpiece of the dark-charm offensive that Facebook launched to beguile new investors. (Those investors, who didn?t feel properly courted by the canned appearance, soon began demanding to see Zuckerberg in person, presumably so they could touch the hem of his garment rather than watch a Facebook-produced video that any schmo could see.)

But as an ambitious propaganda piece that doubles as gloss on the current state of the digital everything, ?Facebook IPO Roadshow? is well worth watching. The film is at pains to deny it?s a commercial. As the flat-affect movie puts it, its entire purpose is to ?enable your investment decisions? and help ?you get to know Facebook better.? Very Silicon Valley. You know there are tens of billions on the line when company leaders get this low-key.

Though several members of the Facebook brass show up, and the film is thick with groovy b-roll and data visualization, Zuckerberg, in his matte blue-gray outfit and matching eyes, steals the show?though he seems, as usual, to have turned in his performance by Facebook chat.

Never has a mortal seemed so laconic and blas? about a company he founded and now hopes to see valued at $100 billion. It?s almost as though, like any garden-variety Harvard kid, he feels entitled to any valuation he dreams up.

Sure, it would be nice, just for the moment, for Zuckerberg to pant for approval a little, and act like he needs us. We are the ones who put the ?public? in IPO after all.

But there?s something in Zuckerberg?s disregard for his audience?that spoiled, half-sadistic style that David Fincher captured in ?The Social Network??that gives his company its mystique. Does the noli-me-tangere whiz-kid without a real, flesh-and-blood friend in sight seem like the future of social life online? Maybe. Maybe there?s something in his master-puppeteer demeanor that allows his company to perpetually outrun charges that it?s faddish and trivial. (On the eve of the IPO, a poll conducted on behalf of the Associated Press and CNBC found that fully half of Americans consider Facebook a flash in the pan!)

Zuckerberg reportedly will not come to New York to ring the NASDAQ bell on Friday. If you?re Mark Zuckerberg, evidently, you don?t genuflect toward the brutish trading floor. You ring bells from wherever you want; in his case, it?s remotely, from his new office in Menlo Park. If he?s using a bell-ringing app, you can be sure it?s got Facebook inside, like Pinterest or Quora or Spotify.

While Zuckerberg maintains his above-it-all style in the film, the onetime fencing champ does manage to pull off some elegant touch?s and trompements at the expense of his competition. The richest one is in his opening lines:

You know, I grew up with the Internet, right, I mean when I had? When I was in middle school I was using search engines like Google and Yahoo.

I just thought that they were the most amazing thing. The thing that always seemed like it was missing was always just people, right. . .

Amazing. Google ends up in the rearview mirror (when Zuck was a preteen, no less) in the first 30 seconds of the speech. Zuckerberg goes on to rhetorically dominate mobile, where Facebook has been thought to be weak, when he prophesizes that all apps will one day be wrapped around Facebook.

And Sheryl Sandberg, the company?s captivating chief operating officer, shows how Facebook rules advertising, with a chipper presentation that lets her position herself as a consumer and user of the site?the way that none of the other company leaders successfully do in the film. (The company?s status as an advertising must-buy for companies looking to digitize came into serious question this week when General Motors announced that it would no longer buy ads on Facebook.)

In all, the film expresses cool triumphalism. On a broad, almost monstrous scale. It?s as though the prophecy has already come to pass; all investors and the public must do is yield to our fate.

Zuckerberg conspicuously name-checks his hacker ethos, which involves creating products with a ?minimum? of features and, even more, a minimum of personal exertion. The word recalls the Zuckerberg character in Fincher?s film brandishing his A.D.D. for his interrogator: ?You have part of my attention; you have the minimum amount.?

In a disclaimer before the movie, the word ?speculation? is never used. Forward-looking statements is the preferred phrase. Speculation sounds flimsy and dangerous, evoking some 19th-century huckster with a high hat and the word ?Diamond? in front of his name. Forward-looking, by contrast, sounds visionary. Clairvoyant, even.

It all looks very clean. I remember joining Facebook five years ago, not long after the collegians-only social network opened its gates to the genpop. A college kid insisted to me that Facebook people were wittier than MySpace people, so I decided to see for myself.

Maybe by witty he meant repressed. In those days, groovy, messy MySpace was dominated by dark, bruised-looking emo collages. Facebook seemed more buttoned-up, square, self-conscious?like an Ivy League kid applying to Goldman Sachs.

It still seems that way. In spite of the scandals surrounding Facebook, and the alarmist treatises about its effects on our lives, there?s something morally fastidious about the company. Like Apple, it?s almost prudish.

If this presentation looks like anti-sales, then, it might just be the blockbuster sales strategy of our age.

Understanding the risks of having an exotic pet at home

This article has been viewed 32 times.

Having a pet at home makes a lot of difference to the entire atmosphere, doesn?t it? Well, you will agree if you have had a pet at home previously. People who have not had any pet might still have to experience to realize it. Pets bring a sense of excitement and fun to our homes. They make us feel that we always have a company at home. Majority of the pets are so friendly and loving. Pets like dogs and cats are trustworthy to the pet owners. However, though having a cat or dog at home is fun there are a few people who feel otherwise. May be they are looking for something more than a simple cat or dog.

These days, some people prefer having exotic pets at home to the more common ones. Do you wonder what could be the reason for that? For some people having an exotic pet is more of a pride. When any visitor gets daunted by the strange appearance of their pets it means prestige and pride to the pet owners. Some of the commonest of the exotic pets include a tarantula, gecko, iguana, and even scorpion! Oh man! I get scared even when I watch these creatures on my cable service that is powered by amazing TV Deals. Anyway, I?m happy that at least my neighbor doesn?t own them!

Hey come on! There is nothing to be like ?eeeeeeek, how are they having these creatures at home?.? Some people can afford to buy and feed them and they feel it is a pride to have these pets at their homes. Simply put, buying a pet is not like buying a toy. It is a new life becoming a member of your household and it truly deserves a lot of attention and care. Most of the exotic pets are imported from foreign countries and they really need special environment to survive. Would you imagine having an exotic pet that is imported from the Savanna grasslands or Amazon Jungle? No, isn?t it? But the main reason why people are purchasing them is because they are aware of the fact that these animals can survive in human-made environment too.

Here are some tips to provide a suitable habitat for your exotic pets. The first and foremost thing that you need to bear in mind is to provide the best habitat for your pet. Design the habitat in such a way that it should look more of nature-made than man-made to your pet. Let the cage be bigger for the pet to move freely. Stuff it with things that make the pet feel it is happy in its dwelling. Provide natural food and a bit of artificial ones that should include more vitamins. The natural food may include insects, worms, mouse, lizards etc.

As far as the well-being of the pets is concerned make sure you give all the care it needs to stay healthy. This is because if it falls sick then it is going to be very difficult not only for you but also for the vet doctor to identify the illness and treat it. Some pets don?t react to the treatment. So, always be extra careful with the health of your pet.

When you are having exotic pets at home always ensure that you don?t go too close to them. You need to be extra careful when you have kids at home. Don?t allow the kids to go near the pets as some of them can be extremely poisonous. To conclude, I would like to say having an exotic pet is not going to an easy task by any means. Even if you do have one, make sure that you take all the necessary steps for your safety.

Army replaces 1st female head of drill sgt school

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? The Army is replacing the first female commander of its prestigious drill sergeant school, it announced Wednesday, just days after it lifted her unexplained six-month suspension.

Even so, Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa King says she will remain in the service and work to restore her reputation.

The Army unit in charge of training said May 4 that King was reinstated after a six-month investigation, whose grounds were never revealed. Fort Jackson, the base near Columbia where the drill sergeant school is located, announced Wednesday there will be a change of command ceremony on Thursday.

King last month filed a complaint that she was targeted because of sexism and racism. King, who is black, will be replaced by a man. The Army named her successor as Command Sgt. Maj. Michael McCoy, who last served with an infantry battalion at Fort Benning, Ga.

King said her Army superiors have turned aside her request to delay the change of command ceremony and denied her request to remain in the post for the six months she was suspended, she said.

"Justice is going to happen," King told The Associated Press this week. "It's going to hurt, but it's going to happen."

The Army never explained what it was investigating when it suspended her Nov. 29, nor did it offer a full explanation when she was reinstated, except to say the investigation involved her conduct.

"We are fighting for her reputation, at this point," said King's attorney, James Smith.

The decision to reinstate King came several days after she filed a legal complaint. The decision was made by Maj. Gen. Bradley May, the deputy commandant of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. May also told her this week she could not remain in her post, Smith said.

Smith said he fears that the Army is going to force King to retire in August, when she becomes eligible after more than 30 years in the ranks.

King was featured in national television reports and newspaper headlines in 2009 when she was tapped to head the Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson, the Army's largest training installation.

About 60,000 soldiers are trained annually at the post. That includes half the Army's male soldiers and more than 60 percent of its female soldiers, increasing the need for female drill sergeant trainers.

Just this week, the Army opened thousands of jobs to female soldiers by loosening restrictions meant to keep them away from the battlefield. Experience on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan showed women were fighting and dying alongside male soldiers anyway.

King said she believes the complaints against her came from those who found her too rigid, when she was following instructions to hold drill sergeants to high standards. And criticism that she had never been deployed in combat is unfounded, she said, because she went where the Army sent her. Once, while posted at Fort Bragg with an airborne unit, she was held back from a combat deployment because she was a woman. Instead, she was sent to jobs in Europe and Washington, D.C.

"I'm not afraid of combat, heck no. I just went where the Army told me," she said.

King and Smith said they intend to press ahead with their formal legal complaint, asking that two of her superiors be investigated for abuse of their authority, even though she is being required to step down from her post.

A spokesman for the Training and Doctrine Command, which is in charge of the drill sergeant school, said the Army is still looking into King's allegations, but would not respond to them in detail in a public forum.

"While the Army takes seriously any and all allegations of racism and sexism, Command Sgt. Maj. King's concerns are being carefully reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken if and as warranted," said Harvey Perritt, spokesman at the Fort Eustis, Va., TRADOC headquarters.

Asked about the change of command, Perritt pointed out that the Army "has determined that it is in the best interests of the Drill Sergeant School that she relinquish her duties as commandant this Thursday, May 17. This date reflects a normal tour length and is based on the arrival of the incoming commandant."

Vision-restoring goggles could avoid troublesome retina implants

2 hrs.

There is much research going on in the vision-restoration sector, and clinical trials are already underway for things like artificial retinas. But a new approach uses a pair of goggles to relay light into the eyes, not unlike the familiar visor worn by Geordi LaForge in Star Trek.

The metaphor isn't perfect, but it serves to illustrate the difference between this system and something like retina replacement. Stanford University's James Loudin tells Nature:?"I'm not well versed in Star Trek anymore, and I don't think Geordi had implants.?However, like his visor, our patients cannot see without the goggles."

Essentially the goggles would have cameras on the front and projectors on the back; the projectors would send images using near-infrared light to a photodiode array (a grid of light-sensing elements) implanted in the eye, which would in turn relay that information to retinal cells. Since the image processing occurs outside the eye and the photodiodes are powered by the light that hits them, the implanted element is much smaller and simpler, and consequently safer and less expensive.

This image from Loudin's paper illustrates how the system works, though of course the real device will look different from these renders:

The downside is that the goggles must always be on in order for people to see. However, once they are on, wearers can look around using normal eye movement,?as if they were seeing the world through normal glasses.

Loudin's research was?published this month in Nature Photonics.?Like the more implant-intensive approaches, the?system is still a ways from being approved and available to the public. But experts suggest it's a matter of years, not decades, before some blind and vision-impaired people?will be sporting technology that was very recently only to be found aboard the Enterprise.
